Troop 25 Backpacking Campout – Beaumont Scout Reservation
📅 Friday, Nov 7– Sunday, Nov 9, 2025
📍 Beaumont Scout Reservation – Backpacking Overnight
🚨 Update:
The Backpacking Campout and Hike has been moved to Beaumont due to logistics. This will still be a true backpacking experience — Scouts will hike in with all their gear, set up a minimalist camp, and practice real-world outdoor skills.
🚗 Drop-off & Meeting Location:
🕠 Parents: Drop-off is directly at Beaumont at 5:30 PM on Friday!
This is not a Sperreng departure. Please be prompt so we can begin our hike before dark.
🥾 What Makes This Campout Different
This is a backpacking-style overnight adventure, not a drive-in campout.
Scouts must carry everything they need on their backs – no wagons, tubs, or trailers. This is all about self-reliance, endurance, and teamwork.
Scouts should be prepared to:
- Hike with their own backpack and gear
- Carry a tent or share with another Scout
- Sleep outdoors — If a Scout doesn’t bring or coordinate a tent, they may be sleeping under the stars
- Carry their own water — bring 1 large bottle (at least 32 oz) or multiple bottles totaling 2–3 liters
- Eat MRE-style meals — no kitchen
- Learn essential backpacking prep for Philmont and beyond
🍽️ Meals
- Friday: Eat before arrival – no dinner served
- Friday Night: Cracker Barrel (snack-style gathering)
- Saturday: All meals provided will be MREs (freeze-dried & rehydrated meals)
- Sunday: Breakfast will be similar to our normal Sunday morning fare for campouts.
🎒 Gear Checklist (Backpacking Style)
Scouts should pack light, smart, and carry only what they need. Required items include:
- ✅ Backpack (internal or external frame preferred)
- 🏕️ Tent (1–2 person max — can be shared but must be carried)
- 💧 At least 2 liters of water (Nalgene, Smartwater bottles, hydration bladders)
- 🥄 Lightweight mess kit (spoon/fork, collapsible bowl, cup)
- 🛏️ Sleeping bag & lightweight sleeping pad
- 🧥 Jacket or hoodie (overnight temps may drop)
- 🧦 Extra socks & change of clothes
- 🧻 Toiletries (toothbrush, small pack of wipes, hand sanitizer)
- 🚫 NO electronics, no coolers, no oversized totes
🧠 Pro Tips from Backpacking Experts:
Even for a one-night trip, experienced hikers recommend:
- Pack by priority: Sleep system, food, water, clothing
- Minimize bulk: Choose compact, compressible gear
- Weight rule of thumb: Your full pack should be no more than 20–25% of your body weight
- Test your gear fit at home: Walk around with your packed backpack
- Use gallon zip bags to organize and waterproof your gear
- Pack rain gear, even if the forecast looks clear
🏕️ Advancement & Importance
This is a must-attend for Philmont 2026 participants — a perfect chance to build experience with pack fitting, trail setup, and lightweight sleeping systems.
Plenty of opportunity for advancement including hiking, packing, camping, cooking, and teamwork.
