The Out Island Adventure is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live on a rugged barrier island. Your crew will paddle roughly 6 miles out to Big Munson Island — an island only inhabited by Scouts. During your stay you'll fish for your dinner, fish for sharks, snorkel, kayak through a mangrove lagoon, explore the island, and work on your survival skills. The first and last nights are spent in air-conditioned dormitories at the Brinton Center; the other 4 nights are spent camping in tents on Big Munson Island.
Kayaking
Paddle 6 miles to Big Munson Island and kayak through mangrove lagoons. Explore the island and surrounding waters by kayak.
Snorkeling
Explore coral reefs and tropical fish in the Florida Keys — plus an unforgettable night snorkel experience.
Island Camping
Camp 4 nights on Big Munson Island, a remote barrier island of hardwood hammocks, mangrove swamps, and sandy beaches accessible only by water.
Shark Fishing
Fish for sharks right off the island, plus catch your own dinner and cook it fresh over an open fire at the Conch Luau.
Fishing
Fish for your dinner in the crystal-clear Florida Keys waters. Cook your catch for the crew at camp. All fishing gear is provided.
Island Experiences
Island campfires, crab races, the SCENES conservation project, and a closing ceremony — memories that last a lifetime.
Requirements
Age
Must be 13 years old by June 13, 2027
Swimming
Must classify as a Swimmer on the Scouting America Swim Test: jump in feet first, swim 100 yards without stopping (75 yards with a strong stroke, then 25 yards with an easy resting backstroke), then rest by floating for 1 minute.
Physical
Current Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A, B, and C)

Attend preparation meetings and complete pre-trip training
The Swim Test Must Be Documented
The swim test has to be taken within a year of the start of the adventure and recorded on a Unit Swim Classification Record, which the crew turns in at check-in. Sea Base does not offer swim tests onsite. Every participant also repeats a Sea Base Swim Review on arrival — anyone who does not pass it is sent home at their own expense with no refund, so we will run and document troop swim checks well before we travel.
Fishing License Required (Age 16+)
All participants 16 and over must purchase a valid Florida saltwater fishing license before the trip. Because we are a summer crew, that is a 3-day license (not a 7-day one) that begins on the third day of the adventure — June 15, 2027. When asked whether you are fishing from a private vessel for certain species, answer no; no add-ons are needed. Licenses can be purchased online at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com.
Arrival & Departure
Sea Base's arrival and departure windows are firm, and they drive how we book flights.
Sunday, June 13 — Arrive 1:00–3:00 PM
Crews must arrive between 1:00 and 3:00 PM, having already eaten lunch. Do not arrive before 1:00 PM. A crew arriving after 3:00 PM may not finish pre-adventure training, which delays the whole adventure.
Saturday, June 19 — Vacate by 10:00 AM
All crews must be off the Brinton Center before 10:00 AM. Regular breakfast is 8:00 AM, and an early continental breakfast can be served if our flight requires it.
Airports
Key West International (EYW) is a 30–45 minute drive; Miami International (MIA) is 3 to 3.5 hours. We will pick the airport and shuttle as a troop so every crew hits the arrival window.
Cost Information
Every payment goes to the troop, not to Sea Base. Sea Base takes a single e-check (ACH) per crew reservation from the unit, so families cannot pay Sea Base directly — we collect each person's share and send one payment. Travel is an estimate, not a quote: airfare moves and we have not booked yet. Meals en route are on top of that. Fundraising may reduce future troop payments, but there are no guarantees. Scout account funds may be applied.
